Sumo

IMG_2750

The Sumo season is now up and running in Tokyo. I went along to the "East Japan versus West Japan" competition and had a blast. I have always thought that Sumo was essentially a lot of half-naked fat men having a series of slap fights. This does indeed seem to be the case. Many of the men involved these days are not even Japanese - most of the top ones being Mongolian. …

Wanchai

IMG_2945

When I left Hong Kong in 2012, I was living in the Wanchai district on Hong Kong Island. This is fascinating part of town, and like every other part, it is going thorugh a remarkable transformation driven by the outlandish value of property in Hong Kong. It used to be a labryrinth of side streets with all kinds of shopping detlights - one street used to specialise in printed paraphernalia for weddings, while another had some amazing snake shops. …

Going for a Walk

M7 Velvia100 020

I have a Labrador - Hana - who is the love of my life. She has settled into Tokyo really well. At least once a week my wife and I try and take her for a 10+ km walk to give her a good exercise session and allow us to randomly wander around Tokyo. We tried to walk to Jiyugaoka - but in our usual fashion got a little last and ended somewhere else this time was Senzoku. …

Central Street Markets - Hong Kong

My 25 year love affair with Hong Kong has given me many, many great memories. It has also given me great sadness as a city turns it back on its history and tries to "modernise" everything. Granted, Hong Kong's history is, depending on your point of view, not always something to be remembered, but it is a product of that history and a wonderful combination of its British colonial past and its incessant Cantonese work ethic. …

Jinbocho Books

F6 Ektar 003

There is a small part of Tokyo that is famous for book shops. Almost every second shop sells secondhand books - and some are even out on the street. It is very interesting, if a little cold on the day I went there. I packed a Nikon F6 with some Kodak Ektar film - which if you believe on the my eariler posts, will be replaced as the love of my life by the newly discovered "new" Portra 160 film. …

Throwing Beans

1Z9W4484

Last weekend was the date for a festival where temples will arrange an event where soy beans are distributed for luck to the waiting throng. I still don't quite understand the meaning behind this practice, but went along to Meguro Fudosan to check it out. The priests for the temple appear to "bless" the beans before they are thrown out to the crowd. …

Saint Pancras Station on Film

M7 Portra160 014

I have a blog entry earlier from London - and due to the digital files, I was able to get them up quite quickly. I now have my roll of film taken at the same time back from developing - I do not develop my own film. I am very happy with the results. I used a Leica M7 with the legendary Noctilux 50mm F1.0 (version 2) lens. …

Abandoned Hong Kong

IMG_1055

Having lived for 25 years in Hong Kong, I have a huge collection of photos of some fo the more unusual parts of the territory. I will sometimes post some articles here about places and shooting projects I had during that time. I have an intense love for Hong Kong and consider my real home - even if not my nationality. …

Faces of Mount Fuji

IMG_1368

I work in a very tall office building in the Akasaka area of Tokyo. My desk, on the 30th floor, is on the western side of the building. This means I can see Mount Fuji very clearly. During Autumn, the sunsets are simply stunning and I get a grandstand view. I keep a small Canon S90 point and shoot on my desk in case I have a few minutes to spare. …

Quick London Trip

_SDI0301

There is always someone around who will try and tell me - "you are so lucky you travel". I suppose most of these people are not traveling for business and associate getting on a plane and jet lag with a holiday. Well good for them. Traveling for business is simply a different game altogether. I am sitting typing this in the Cathay Pacific Airways Lounge at Heathrow Airport in sunny London. …
