Toyama with “The Beast"

I have a rather large collection of cameras. That means when I want to go out shooting, I have a very long and laboured process of choosing which camera to take. I usually take too many. Sometimes I get it right. Of all the cameras I have, the Pentax 67II is probably the one I enjoy the most. Granted it is big, heavy, super loud and a pain to load, but the results speak for themselves. Simply NOTHING looks as good as the results from this thing. The Hasselblad comes close, with a signature all of it’s own, but I often prefer the Pentax. The fact it also has an almost infallible metric light meter built in, certainly helps. The lenses are very special indeed.

I had to go to Toyama on the north coast on the main island of Honshu, as my wife was running the marathon there. While she did that, I rented a car and went into the mountains to see the autumn leaves and also try and find the very unique villages that the area is famous for. The villages made themselves rich on a trade in explosives (no I ma not making this up) and built houses for themselves that reflect the need for extra snow protection. I was there in glorious weather, equipped with my Pentax and a lot of rolls of Fujifilm PRO400H that is booming my mainstay now for colour negatives - along with the rather more expensive Portra 400. A steep roof sheds snow and rain easily. This place is often under 1 meter or more of snow in the winter.

Building in such a deep valley means that the sunshine doesn’t get to the floor for very long. This place must be so damp much of the year.
