Having lived for 25 years in Hong Kong, I have a huge collection of photos of some fo the more unusual parts of the territory. I will sometimes post some articles here about places and shooting projects I had during that time. I have an intense love for Hong Kong and consider my real home - even if not my nationality. Every time I go there, I feel that I am back home.
In the New Territories of Hong Kong - that is the part of the mainland that is not Kowloon and was actually the bit leased to the British for 99 years and thus the reason for the handing back to China in 1997 - there are many abandoned villages. These are the real Hong Kong - Hakka farmers who were there long before the British and the flood of escapees from the Communists in the 50's and 60's. They have been abandoned as the younger generations all move to the UK, Canada and various other places in search of a better life. As the older folks die off, the villages gradually fall into ruin from neglect. My favourite of these for photographing is Luk Keng near the border at Sheung Shiu. You can see the People's Republic proper from the village across the bay. It makes for a stunning location for photography - and a very little known one as well. Many people I show these photos to find it hard to imagine it is Hong Kong.
